Original David Hockney Exhibition Lithograph Poster, entitled "8 Sun chairs by a Pool", was created in 1996 for Hockney's Drawing Exhibition held at the Los Angeles County Museum. The artwork depicts a swimming pool with eight orange lounge chairs lined up beside it, with palm trees and a building in the background. Hockney's fascination with swimming pools began in the 1960s after he moved to Southern California, where he found the poolside culture to be a "new form of paradise". His pool paintings often feature "scenes of gay domestic life," contrasting with his experience in England, where homosexuality was illegal until 1967. Hockney's love for his casual Californian lifestyle is frequently the subject of his more vibrantly colorful works.
